Terminal Tackle

Tackle attached to the end of a fishing line that gets cast out along with the bait are referred to as terminal tackle. Terminal tackle can include hooks, leaders, floats, sinkers/feeders, swivels and attached snaps and/or split. All these components make up the tackle used by anglers to entice and catch their target fish.

The Palomar Knot is probably the strongest knot in the bunch. This knot can be used in slippery braided line like Spider wire. The San Diego Jam Knot also works very well in braided line. And for snelling a hook, be sure to check out the “Easy Snell Knot”.

Terminal fly fishing tackle connects the fly line to the artificial fly. This is typically a tapered or level ”leader” with a ”tippet” section. Other types of tackle may include small ”strike indicators” or weights added to the leader to assist in strike detection and presentation. Bait fishing is at its core an extremely simple way to fish. You catch something small, put it on the end of your line, and try to catch something bigger.

The truth is, all you need is a small investment in a beginner’s rod and reel, a hook, line and some kind of bait or lure, and you’ll soon be on your way to catching fish!
