Description
Live bait is the most effective bait because fish are first attracted to real live prey in the wild. Getting healthy baits from the well to the hook is best done using a live bait net. Fish latch onto live bait with gusto, improving the chances of a deep hooked fish on your line.
Bait nets consist of a nylon or polypropylene net attached to an aluminum or stainless-steel hoop with a handle made of wood, aluminum, or other material. When selecting a bait net, make sure to choose the net with the features for your type of fishing. The net’s opening must be large enough to easily grab whatever type of baitfish you have in your bait tank and the net’s mesh must be small enough to keep the baitfish from slipping through. For large baitfish like mullet, you can use a bait net with a larger mesh. Small baitfish like anchovies require a small mesh. Bait net handles vary.
While many are non-adjustable, some bait net handles can be extended for greater reach or collapsed for compact storage. Some bait nets are designed to float. These nets have coated handles for added protection against the elements, and salt water especially. We do recommend rinsing them off after use for obvious reasons.
Usage:
As a fisherman on a rocking boat, grabbing bait from the live well by hand can be challenging. Use this net to get under the bait where it can be gently lifted out of the live well. With the bait in the net, you can pin the bait on the hook without directly touching the bait.
Live squid will bite, sardines’ scoot, and anchovies just don’t want to be handled. It’s not clear if fish can smell the human scent on live bait or if they even care. We do know that the less you handle bait the lively it will be, and lively fish get bit first.
