Double Assist Fishing Hooks

$6.95

Double assist fishing hooks solve a couple problems. ONE: An assist hook eliminates jig to leader foul when vertical jigging. A jig that is rigged in a traditional fashion via split ring and treble hook has a common fouling issue. This usually happens when yo-yo or speed jigged. This issue will drive an angler crazy especially in deep water situations.

Standard vertical jigging is violent and much faster to get the fish to chase, while slow pitch is much more rhythmic and the jig flutters and falls to the fish. Slow-pitch rods are specialized, much lighter and designed to work the jigs and allow them to flutter downward. With precise movements, the angler can make the bait look like a moving and alive but wounded fish. Keeping that in mind, the optimal gear ratio for slow jigging is 7.5:1 to 8.3:1. This is a high ratio, but that is what you’d want to have in a slow jigging reel.

Assist hooks are built with a J-styled hook that is rigged with a super-strong Spectra/Dyneema/Kevlar cord with a loop. This is placed at the opposite end for attaching to the lure itself or a solid ring. Depending on who you ask, double assist fishing hooks should be 1/3 length of jig, or even less for long jigs. Usually just long enough to get the hook through the loop ~2-2.5. You’ll get different opinions, and any length will likely work.

Slow pitch jigging is primarily a bottom fishing tactic and is downright deadly on snapper and grouper in 60 to 200 feet of water. The technique is also deadly for species like tile fish, snowy grouper, and barrel fish in deep-drop territory. Slow-pitch jigs can also be worked in the middle of the water column for tuna, which can’t resist a jig.

Usage:

A good rule of thumb when learning how to fish, is to wait and feel the weight of the fish before setting it. If the fish is cautious and just tapping your fishing line and bait lightly, and not biting it, it’s best to wait. Let the fish take the bait, and then set the hook after you feel its weight.
