Sometimes, a fish bone might not come out on its own. In that case, see a doctor immediately. If the fish bone is stuck in your esophagus or somewhere else in your digestive tract, it can pose a real danger. It can cause a tear in your esophagus, an abscess, and, rarely, life threatening complications. Generally, the doctor can remove the fish bone using special tweezers, but in the most difficult cases it may be necessary to perform a minor surgery to remove the fish bone.

If you feel like food is stuck in your esophagus, try drinking water or a carbonated beverage, eating soft foods, or taking over-the-counter medications like antacids or simethicone to help dislodge it. If the problem persists or worsens, seek medical attention

The tapered, flat tip makes it especially easy to reach in and pull small bones in fish or pinfeathers in poultry.

Trying to dig out the bone with your fingers or flushing it down with rice are not recommended as these actions may lead to more injuries, migration of the fish bone or push the fish bone deeper into the neck. Anyone who has caught and filleted a salmon, trout or other fish, knows the pain of the pin bones. The pin bones extend from the spine to the lateral line, along the side of the fish. Unlike the rib bones, they aren’t easy to cut away without loosing some of that nice meat.

You can find the pin bones along the center of the fillet. Run your fingertip along the red line to locate the bones. Use fish tweezers to pull each bone out. The bones usually reach to about halfway along the fillet. Check that you have removed all of the bones and then the fish is ready to cook.
