Description
The Topwater Wobbling Pumper Thumper(AP) is a topwater type fishing lure. The lure is cast out and retrieved in a “walk the dog” fashion (side to side or zigzag motion). It mimics an injured fish. This bait comes in many different shapes and sizes but the most prominent is the minnow type. The best way to fish with this bait is using the walk the dog fishing technique. By twitching your rod tip you will create a zigzag retrieval pattern on the water’s surface that is irresistible to gamefish like snook, tarpon, redfish and speckled trout.
While mostly used in freshwater fishing, we have been using this bait in saltwater. Ambush predators in the surf hear commotion and see what looks like a struggling fish. They then attack what they think is their next meal and the battle begins. On the left coast, these baits are awesome when worked over the top of Kelp forests. Bass sometimes hide out under the leaves and when they hear the commotion and a struggling fish they pounce.
The AP stands for “Anchovy Pattern”

Most topwater baits can be fished with a 7-foot medium heavy rod, a 7:1 gear ratio reel and 30-pound braided line. I personally use a lighter line when using these baits in the surf. If you establish this as your base line, you can go bigger and stronger with larger baits, and backoff a little with smaller baits. Top water baits are among the most exciting baits you can fish for bass. Off the coast, halibut and surf perch are always looking for a quick meal and this bait does not disappoint.
Besides, topwater baits are often very productive and can sometimes out-fish other techniques. In general, topwater baits are usually most effective in warm to cool water. Many anglers stick with standard-sized 4- to 5-inch topwater lures to prompt explosive strikes from inshore saltwater fish, like spotted seatrout, redfish, and snook. Offshore species also consume these baits because when worked, they look like fish trying to escape a disappearing bait ball.
Topwater fishing for anything is one of the most thrilling experiences in angling, and walking baits are an indispensable tool for any serious bass enthusiast. These lures are particularly effective when the water temperature rises above 55°F, as they mimic the erratic movements of prey that hungry find irresistible. The surface boils, and explosions will surely get your blood pumping when something consumes the bait.
